On a warm Saturday morning, families began filling the church grounds early—parents pushing strollers, kids bouncing beside them, everyone looking for a cool spot and a good start to the day. The event opened with prayer from Rev. Donald Lawrence, a quiet pause before the rush, followed by live music that pulled people in and set the tone for what turned out to be a full, busy noon. Once the program got going, the space felt like a small village of booths. Health centers, job programs, financial groups, and community organizations lined the walkways, each ready with information, giveaways, and a friendly face. Face painting, financial workshop and more. You could see parents asking questions, receiving free giveaways, and vendors calling folks over to their tables. The big draw for many families was simple: visit at least ten booths, and you earned a free backpack. That rule kept people moving. Parents worked their way through the list stamp by stamp while children treated it like a scavenger hunt—counting stops, collecting stickers, and tugging their parents toward the next table. Every hour or so, the music would dip and an announcement would cut through the crowd: another prize drawing. Cheers went up, names were called, and for a few minutes the whole fair paused to celebrate whoever won. Then it was right back to the booths, the music, and the steady stream of families still coming through the doors. By midday, backpacks were filling up and the lines at popular tables stretched a little longer. You saw Jamaica Nurses Association, Care Resource, One Blood, CareerSource, Aetna, and plenty of local groups all doing their part—answering questions about school, health, jobs, and what families need heading into the new year. As the afternoon wound down, the fair still had that easy summer energy: music in the background, kids comparing their new backpacks, and parents leaving with more than free supplies. They left with connections, information, and the feeling that the neighborhood had showed up for them—one booth, one prayer, and one prize drawing at a time.
